How: to clean silver jewelry nature's way

I wear almost exclusively silver jewelry, but it's a real downside if the oil made my skin leaving it dull and dirty looking tarnishes the metal. Recently I was clear, I wear a few pieces myself that I really like and it hadn't previously only because the tarnish made less shiny and beautiful as you you. I knew I could go and buy some expensive toxic silver my jewelry restore polishing to its original splendour, but after a little research, I discovered a natural way to get the job done, toxic chemicals do not affect the.

So I a small experiment with a silver necklace my parents who brought back from a trip to Alaska a few years ago.I had worn the necklace in years, because it had become so boring but after 15 minutes or so, as again is new! here's how I did it:

Step 1: Wash the jewelry. You want to remove all dust and extra oil, so that you not response needed conflict over stattfinden.Ich a DAB of dish SOAP Seventh Generation.Die SOAP rinse with but don't bother to dry it.

If you can't get away

There are a lot of different angles of this whole "environmentalists" thing, probably because the "environment"from"all" basically consists that makes for a variety of angles. So have we the energy angle and the transport angle and the food angle and the multi-purpose underwear angle and on and on and all others, most overlapping of you and cross pollinating ad infinitum. But just as with biological vs. children or guys named Jonas adopted, we inevitably choose Favorites: I like the wilderness angle (also, Nick; he is the real talent.) Or maybe should we call it the land conservation angle. Whatever. It was my first love (for the record, we are no longer discussing Jonas Nick.) Through all recycling Hypermiling and organic strawberries and "If it is yellow, mellow let it" I have a picture in my head – worth saving a place and for me it's the kind of place where none of these different angle even apply because you have made it there. You are not ready to go far.

I read a forum recently Seattle mail readers what asked, which at the remote site in your state. Most of the thread was dominated by residents of the Western US discuss the geography and the seclusion of the places such as the Frank Church-River of no return wilderness in Idaho and southeastern Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming. The discussion was quickly focused on an idea of the remote: distance from the nearest road. Early, voted in to draw someone from Massachusetts, this condition probably don't have a single site more than a linear mile of a street. Sad but not surprising. By the mileage range I have hiked and nights on the ground in my own State, the wildest place I had been in Georgia probably in the Cohutta mountains where the farthest reaches approximately 2.5 miles from the nearest road (gravel). The most of a street that you can get in the Peach State is undoubtedly in the Middle the Okefenokee Swamp, where asphalt more than bad, but to compare a walk at the southeast corner of the Yellowstone is eight miles away wäre.Nicht almost 30 miles of a roadway, lower 48 leaders in this particular competition.

Although I spent much of last year, on the southern edge of the great Wyoming roadless area life, I have never (Grizzly-infested) remoteness made it out to this mystical Paragon. I would not know if I it anyway, isn't it, how it is a sign.Bent on cards and plotting the straight-line distances, I did manage to find out when and where I was at my most remote (discounting the General isolation of my personality that reached from my couch can be): September 2009, I was stand atop Fremont peak in the Wind River range of Wyoming, 10 miles from the nearest Straße.Ich have never alone or further help. I think this is pretty cool, but I had to go to Wyoming, to do it.

Point is there are out places where you can and way all get it in this country, but are fragmented (10 miles is really not much if you a Grizzly or even a Bobcat) and are relatively few.I want to keep those we nor haben.Auf the photo above Fremont peak, the ten linear miles back towards the street, see taken nothing but rocks, trees and wildlife (and one that dead next to the track in the remaining races.)SieAber also is one of the largest natural gas fields in the country, an area of contention for environmentalists worried with Habitat destruction. even standing on a mountain wilderness, a battle is not far away.

What is the farthest place you've ever been?

How can I reuse or recycle body jewelry?

We have an email from Toni had:

Know all charities to collect the used body piercing jewelry?Everyone seems to want to gold, and these are not gold Stahl.Ihre are earring proposals either, because you ring and bars.

Marie Curie's jewellery recycling system claimed to accept everything - real or costume, broken or work so I, the melt-it down for scrap thought perspective would accept you.

I have heard, some body Piercers, reusing dumbbells - must serve you definitely sterilised before use and some items only for a few weeks ago (for example, by borrowing from my own experience, the longer bars used for the swollen weeks after tongue piercings) replaced. But I would be over, that sterilized doubtful, even, how small nicks & scratches on the jewelry can increase the risk of infection due to the.

Any better reuse or definitive recycling ideas for dumbbells and barbells (closure rings)? what is with connector and tunneling? someone done no fun Upcycling/reassignment with you?

How can I reuse or recycle paint roller trays?

There's a word for, if skips shopping passages are? I was skip looked (?), around the corner the other day and as well as with a mighty fine looking range there (Yoiiiiink), there were several old color roller trays on top hurled.

Compared to roles, paint of trays are super easy to clean (especially if you with a carry bag first line), so I don't know why thrown was wurden.Es a few emulsion ones and a few smaller ones shine.

We have many shells for painting itself, but I think I could you rinse and offer on Freecycle or something.

I have used old roller trays as trays under seedlings as reused for in the past (the deep part is useful, if you are you carry around, have a tendency to shake off the shelf bit - but that's fine, Fang expire if it is in a place) .what else can happen to you?

How can I reuse or recycle trade size ice sinks?

The other day, John and I were hanging around a dumpster on the back of an ice cream parlour - how to do - and spotted it was full of 5ltr plastic ice bath.

In our House, ice bath our favorite plastics are one reuse-rectangular 1ltr square are tubs just the right size of storing leftovers and the 2ltr are useful for other storage stuff (three current reused: we have one for chicken of scraps in the kitchen I got unbepflanzt seeds in another and a third & fourth uses for batteries — one for new batteries, the other for batteries, the heading recycling) - and are usually made of reasonably frequently recyclable plastic types - that I have here are polypropylene resin code 5 to be honest, I was quite surprised that a recycling system in place have this ice cream not, because there was certainly a reasonable number generated each day.

Next time we are in the area, I'm trying, wondering whether I a dozen can have, or to wiederverwenden.Sie were approximately 30 cm (1 ft) or so long, 15 cm / 6″ high and the same wide.I have Office of lots of and a nice way to do it could craft stuff better stored and a row of those on a shelf.

She would also work as a planter for growing salad etc. - the thin counter in our veranda, although I am trying to move away from growing stuff in Kunststoff.Lagerung and planter-, a look my reuse ideas for almost everything is at the moment I think one more say in our lives;)

The wonderful John B got in contact with my John the other day regarding whether we could use a few sheep webs: someone he knows from a farmer client the Webs commissioned.

How can I repair a rusted to grill?

After reading last week's barbecue themed questions, adjusts, Ali got in touch, that repair rusted to BBQ:

The grill is rusty pretty much all over and it admits a rust hole in the base.My husband wants to get throw it out and another, but I want to try, you first give me to beheben.Bitte some hope that the effort is worth with a wire scrubber!

Many barbecues at the cheaper end of the market have steel grills and as soon as the chrome receives, scratched or otherwise damaged the exposed steel rusts schnell.Sie can really all the rust rise now, but I'm not sure you will all heat/food-friendly manner able to keep it in the future - who knows, to protect it?If it a cast-iron grill - most expensive, but not unusual that - then you can protect his de rust it and it again as each cast iron pan/appliance.

As for the base, it depends on the size/position of the hole - a small one could case turned werden.angenommen deep into a fat, it is a kettle/barrel type BBQ strips could it right back to metal (may value all done, at once) and repaint to reduce it with heat proof paint metal (such as stove paint) spent more Rosten.Wie someone who has, long stripping metal recently warn me leave, it is however not just a fun pastime.

If you don't think it's value to save them the trouble you learn from this one's early death, if you buy / for your next care - look for one with a better barbecue or if there is already a good, better protect it in the first place and leave not barbecues outside and revealed in wet / damp weather.

How can I reuse or recycle old vitamin tablets?

We have already discussed pill bottles on the website but the vitamin question is a good, and I'm not sure the answer. I suspect it might be "best not".We have to rely always on expired medicines carefully to avoid danger to the public/wild animals and equipped to avoid contamination of the environment/water supply. While dietary supplements are usually much more harmless, there is some risk, for example, iron surprisingly toxic to children, and probably small animals are kann.Ich am not, saying that many children in your compost around for a fixed the pills will chase, but the payment not really but value scheint.Ich can the risk be wrong.

I am also not sure if many is reused for you...

A: Earth-friendly products for A beautiful world

A few weeks ago, I was sent a few bath products from a company called one. Your mission statement is to make earth-friendly products to promote the natural beauty and the beauty of the Earth conservation. Use all natural products and recyclable packaging. Your vision also says: "from pampering bath formulas to nourish moisturizers, is the entire collection with rich oils, natural butters and delicate fragrance, stimulating, body and spirit infused with natural ingredients. Eco-conscious and pampering? Sign me up!

You sent me two different products review; you wild coconut body butter, which came in an awesome Tin and smelled the beach in Puerto Rico and the extra virgin bar SOAP, which somewhat recyclable came cardboard.

The fragrant coconut body butter is great. After a day in the Sun hopping in the shower, a peeling and then rub in some feeling this moisturizing lotion is pretty amazing. It has a thick consistency but not my sensitive skin caused ausbrechen.Der coconut smell to try three different people to steal from me, but I have managed it from the clutches of everyone but me to hold. Because I'm selfish like that.

As for the bar SOAP, it is made with olive oil extra vergine (hence the name) and it smells clean and erfrischend.Es works just about as well as any other SOAP, I tried and seems to my skin irritating at all either, that's always a bonus. The only downside to the SOAP is that it really easily breaks into pieces which means I landed with pieces SOAP rather than a great bar.I enjoyed it yet though.

As for the purchase of one I think products only to target save vorliegen.Beide of products I checked now are currently out of print but there are other scents to the try verfügbar.Wenn do, let me know what you think! I will definitely this coconut body butter in the future buy again.

How can I reuse or recycle plastic cabbage salad/potato salad sinks?

Between the good weather and the World Cup has every weekend before recently barbeque madness in the United Kingdom, i.e. the burgers, salads and salad accompaniments are shelves at the grocery store revealed by 10 am, only one lonely limp iceberg lettuce left to say the devastation.

Prepacked prepared food like coleslaw, potato salad, Bean Salad or Couscous - and the most salad bar sinks I've - seen come in plastic tubs with resealable lid, but the plastic tends to be somewhat easy & flimsy - so not as could be ripe for the reuse of such as you.

What you use for?You seem a little too flimsy me as storage tubs in the kitchen – not stiff enough to properly clean to use.

Plant pots? again, not the most stable pots tend plant, the pots in the world, but a lot Starter modules/seedling to be a similar quality so that you could be used.

Since you are often especially transparent, it would be useful for storing small items such as screws or pearls.

Any other suggestions reuse?

There are angle there also obviously a potential "reduce" - it's not hard to machen.Leider these things, if you use mayonnaise or similar in the cabbage salad/potato salad, it is advice not to fix it since the Mayo expected to thawing is separate - but if you think a friend might freeze ideal part size quantities to the shredded vegetables mixed or cooked potatoes - so then it is a no-brainer, made them if you need: easy thawing and add the Mayo & all other Gewürze.Oder can special recipes for freezing - such as freezer coleslaw.

What are your favorite recipe ideas?

How can I build a barbecue, reuse or recycling stuff?

In a bit of a barbecue-themed week improvised, I thought I would ask about the construction of the main part of the experience: the grill. This is partly because I am interested in a little Smokehouse BBQ ideas and part, because I think building for my birthday and I suspect it will overlap a bit - and questions can be a little dark Smokehouses.

So anyway, barbecues.John's father, my father love has a number of brick grills - squared - off u form of stones about hip - salvaged brick built: I think he used Grill kits for the grill bits, but there is a possibility he questions will the coals from scrap to schwenken.Ich him tomorrow.

But brick structures tend to be somewhat constantly - be what some more mobile ones? those made from old oil drums (or ideally not oil metal drums) seem quite common DIY BBQ world.Old gas bottles apparently can be used for smaller versions, but there is more concern with initial cutting.

Any other suggestions? any use ideas about things for the coals pan or the grill? and what about alternatives such as fireplaces?

How can I reuse or recycle meat Grill overcooked?

Inspired by thinking about barbecue flavored food packaging on Monday, we a bit of a improvised BBQ-themed week here on this recycle have. This is one less than a "reuse or recycle" and more a question of "how you use it?"...

It seems always a few burgers or sausages, which left overs at grills - links on the grill or the keep warm grill, although no one wants that you, and you go dry or contact one day black lumps.

Be this situation could of course all together avoided but only cooking right meat (hard to judge) and of course it is better to take you way before you, that reach point, if are still edible and have everyone as remains at some point, but all recipes for dehydrated meat have does? Our fussy-when-she-wants-to-be dog appeared the second week your nose to the dry but-still edible Burger, but I suspect that only would have gone cats for it, we had at home.

And if you have gone beyond, and are essentially greasy coal? you crushed / reason and can be used as a fertilizer soil as other coal?

How do you ensure that you all use the last bit?

This is really good life, cross-posted in my new economical/growing/manufacture/cooking blog.

I have my shampoo bottle and our mayonnaise glass erreicht.Und the end... it took me

Any vaguely-economical/green family has their own tricks this last bits Gloop, sauce, oil forever or what ever the jars and bottles - but what are your top tips?

The most bottles - of spices, shampoo - are easily empty, by you on the head for a few hours.

Cooking sauces - glasses/canned tomatoes - are easy to: a little Squish the sauce/juice water around to drag it from the past and then into the Pan goes off to be reduced.

Cooking oil bottles and jams & honey glasses get a bowl of hot water to the remaining content a little runny and left easier to pour out.

Metal of of squeezy pipes - tomato paste and old school toothpaste - rolled and compressed can be but the new plastic tubes of toothpaste are not rotationally - cut open seems the only option.

What other methods do you use?

How can I reuse or recycle used paper plate?

Completion until our impromptu barbecue themed week, I thought I would scream contributing get run certainly some people "Don ' T USE THEM AT ALL!" "USE REAL, reusable backing plates!"- and the people have a very good point. The first part of the 3Rs is reduce and disposable paper plate are really unnecessary in most situations - and also usually very frustrating to eat way.

However, they are still useful in some situations - for example, very great outdoor parties, especially for clumsy children or festivals, etc., so it probably think about ways to the reuse or recycle the time worth if you are almost inevitable.

Between food waste and the often synthetic wax/plastic coating are used moisture to make immune you not really want you close your compost pile. scrape can paper plates which designed, then composted, though — some made from thick paper from Palm fronds, others a light bamboo - only off each lot food waste that could cause a problem for your heap.On our post about waxed someone said cups you can reuse, TetraPak recycling I wax paper plates would, if so,...

Other suggestions/tips? or ideas for alternatives?

5 Green stay cool possibilities

I don't know about your area, but here in the South, it's pretty much blazing hot for several weeks. I am with a little perspiration alright, but if the mid-90's I feel temperatures hit me okay of turning the air conditioner. The problem is that every time I hear the unit on kick and feel the wind blows from the cam, I'm glad the cool relief, but also increasingly concerned about what this month my energy bill will look like. But we must not rely on air alone to not keep cool us, when the outside temperatures are three digits nähern.Hier five ways without the use of electricity, make your electric bill to keep cheaper and your House a little greener cool.

It is particularly effective on pulse points, such as the neck, the back of your knees, and on the bottom of the feet.

2. Skip the Ofen.Sommerzeit Cook should include the stove, barbecue in the free or a slow cooker. With the oven is a good way in winter to keep warm your House, but in the summer, need your help to keep things hot. Search recipes, for light that the oven shall not apply.

3. Seal the deal. Issue it cracks around Windows and doors, your precious cool air left? Invest in new weatherstripping to seal the gaps, or want to become all MacGyver, use tape. You can actually save the pretty function on your electric bill this way.

4. Make like a cow and browse. You know that bloaty feeling that you are right, get after you eat a big meal?Should cool to say you in summer, you skip the heavy Essen.Essen several small meals during the day which is healthier for your system. No one likes the food sweats.

I firmly believe that not buy things we don't need, one of the best ways is to more environmentally friendly decisions in our lives.

I am also convinced that there are so many devices there, which are not necessary.  A toaster heated also hot dogs?  Well, if you need a new toaster and prefer hot dog slots not have good one with but, when it inspired casting off perfectly good toaster for the Vienna upgrade.  I already have a quesadilla Maker-it's called a pan made of cast iron.  And I have a smoothie/Margarita/Frappe - Maker - it's called a mixer and it is okay that it have no little spout down, I can pour top just fine. But two months ago, I broke down and bought an iced tea maker, I had always considered unnecessary one betrachtet.Und I am so glad that I did something.

Yes, I have a Teakettle and a pitcher.  Yes, that is technically all, I must make that iced tea, but I never did.  I would start to make iced tea but my water filter pitcher would be full enough to fill the teapot, so I would to fill and maintain. Then I would start boiling water in my Teakettle on the stove, but I would have unattended execution outside with the dogs, or down to laundry to check, and I want the oven to make, so I would turn it weg.Wenn I finally boiling water around, would I way BREW it in the jar and walk pour.  I would forget a few calls to check a few E-mails, I made iced tea and a large pitcher bitter over-brewed tea.

Maybe it should the size of a chore, but it was, and I am very eager to about me be even realistic.  I want to work with who I am not the person I wish I was.  I wish I were a person making a pitcher of iced tea from beginning could always distracted end without but in reality, I am someone who is now so busy that feels a luxury showers.

I would start in the absence of having iced tea, require other beverages.Soda, fancy bottles teas, juices, lemonade, Seltzer - drinks that have delivered nationwide in heavy bottles. They were appealing, because you ready made easy and more interesting than plain old water. And, unfortunately, most of you were full of empty calories.

My iced tea maker works with bagged or half loose green tea may loose Tee.Ich and half fresh mint from my garden to use does not need, sweetener and dry tea Schiff.Alle so much less ready tea made energy than bottles I have to do, to an iced tea some water in the bottom of the pitcher to set fill is the reservoir in the machine, to throw some tea leaves in the basket and drücken.Es heats water for tea much more efficiently than my oven not a button.

I use it almost every day, so I start to test it a necessary appliance and I have not tried to buy drinks because I got it in bottles.

What can I reuse or recycle to build a cold frame?

(I suppose be an overlap between this and our previous question therefore, greenhouses, but I thought I would ask again, because you are a little different.)

I have lots of fun, things in our new garden grow. The old garden was significantly small and got none (no!) direct exposure to sunlight whatsoever made of growing things a little difficult. Here we get much more sun - at various points during the day - and that was actually a bit this summer a problem - my current kindergarten area (porch) was always a bit too hot for some types of seedlings. next year, I want more kindergarten space usually so I thought a cold frame would make sense.

Cold frames are a this great DIY projects with more people who are likely to buy your own from scrap as you create. But I have builders ' block - unable to think a bit what verwenden.Ich my eye from old Windows or similar, and I have for almost Yoinked of my best friend's old shower but it was too large and problematic would be down - but apart from cut that I can remember what I require clear parts use. welcome suggestions?

As for the frame my father built his latest cold frame using the frame of my old childhood bed (a divan, a predesigned border) that made me start to facilitate for my weak woodworking skillz on other prefabricated frames: we have an old table that could be tilted head to provide a solid basis and uprights - adding things to you probably would be much easier than start from scratch.

Another idea might be a brick frame create - we have some rescued bricks around the places - but I wouldn't know how to on a cover, the Scharnier.Edelstahlfarben lid is not important, only useful when...

Any other suggestions? all advantages / disadvantages on brick or wood frames? what have you done?

How can I reuse or recycle waste pencil erasers?

Deconstructing for dollars: Recycling building materials can mean more than simply salvaging light fixtures

Puget Sound Business Journal (Seattle) - by Brad Broberg Contributing Writer

To Thomas Nielsen, an old 2-by-4 is a terrible thing to waste -- or even recycle.

So when workers begin removing hundreds of timeworn public housing units to prepare for redeveloping the High Point community in West Seattle, Nielsen hopes to dismantle -- not destroy -- as many buildings as possible.

"No one's really tried it at this scale before," says Nielsen a project manager with the Seattle Housing Authority.

The process is called deconstruction. And while selective salvaging and/or recycling have long been part of the demolition process, total deconstruction is the latest -- and greenest -- way to go.

"The essence of deconstruction is to extract the embodied energy of all of the materials you encounter through the course of a demolition project," says Jim Primdahl, a deconstruction consultant from Portland.

How can I reduce the amount of energy I use cool keeping?

(A companion post use heating super tips to reduce energy costs, last October - in winter!)

After a few false starts, summer is definitely here in the UK now and it is the warmest for a few years it has (although not much say that is really). We're not really very hot or very cold weather - equipped because until we started, we regularly either get messing with the climate - air-con now is new jobs University events and places - offices, shops, cinemas, etc. to spielen.Menschen are increasingly small air con units buy for their homes, but generally more people just run to keep fans air circulate - both, of course, use electrical juice.

How to Calculate the Value of Scrap Gold

If you have any scrap gold, you can sell it, but for how much? Gold prices tend to rise along with worries of war or inflation but before you bring gold jewelry, dental fillings, teeth, nuggets, and bars to a scrap gold dealer's counter (or send it off by mail) you should know exactly what it's worth. Most scrap gold dealers keep the calculation a secret. Here is their formula.

Steps

1. Separate your scrap gold into their various karat fineness (i.e. 10k, 14k or 18k). You may need a magnifying glass to see the number inscribed on the piece. If not, you may need to have the gold tested by a reputable dealer. There's also the possibility that some of the gold is actually just gold-plated, which a dealer would determine with certainty by using a chemical test. If you're uncertain, read up on How to Tell if Gold Is Real.

How can I reuse or recycle old doormat?

We have an email from Chrissy questions what had to do with an old doormat:

The Bristly Art.Kompost it?

The Bristly ones usually consist of coir - coconut - so a natural material, compost - is but it can apparently takes many years to zersetzen.Das is really a good thing - we had to replace our mats when you every six months - rotted more frequently and it would rot probably, down in a warm, moist compost faster than on the door, but maybe one am view compost long for a rather than a quick one turn.(Also, be careful when has rubber or synthetic backing - you might not want that at all in your compost reduction.)

Short in your e-Mail and say sweet not Chrissy why is get rid of it, but according to its State in the same or an other capacity could - if I a spare rubber floor mat right now had, no matter how grubby, it would go outside the door to our so I wipe chicken run could my feet on the road after traipsing outside secured garden wiederverwendbare.Oder, I made a Wellington boot before becoming a few weeks and it could be fitted easily with helping some strips of Bristly coir, first to clean up the mud out of you.

Any other suggestions reuse?

Salvage Lumber Success in Petaluma: $700,000 in three years

12/17/2009 There's big money in salvage lumber. This fellows success reminds me of how well I did in the deconstruction business. I often found that when I tore down an old building or structure - that I usually got for free or was paid to tear down - I would have all or most of the material sold before it ever hit the ground. I'll be including more about my experience in deconstruction and building material salvage in upcoming realeases of my Gold from Electronic, Telecommunication & Computer Scrap: Experiences from the Field. Please check my Deconstruction, Recycling and Reusing Lumber and Building Materials pages for more articles and inspiration.

High profits come from turning over your recycled and salvage material as quickly and as often as possible

recyclingsecrets.com

When I first started out I wanted to hold on to the material I collected telling myself I was waiting for the best price. It took me awhile to realize that by doing this I was crippling my business and putting it at risk. If you are like I was, you have a limited amount of capital and most likely started out by bootstrapping your business. If you are, it makes the most sense to turn over what you have collected as quickly as possible.

Here's an example. Let's say you paid $500 for a pickup load of high grade computer boards this morning. Gold has been going up and down and now it's a bit down, but you paid the amount you paid based on the value of gold NOW. So, you have to decide if you are in the salvage/recycling business or if you are a speculating investor. A speculator might hold off, see how the market goes and try to sell high, but this doesn't work if you are in the business. In this business it makes most sense to process or sell the goods today or tomorrow - as soon as possible - to get back your $500 stake plus 10-20% profit or more and have your capital available to do it again and again as often as possible.

Here's another way to look at it. If you pay $500 for something and can sell it tomorrow for $550, you've made a 10% profit in one day. If you wait a week for a better price and sell it for $575, you've made a 15% profit in a week but much less than that per day. For the entire week, you have not had your $500 of capital to use to buy and sell more material. $50 every day or so is more than $75 in a week. The more often you turn over your material, the higher your profit will be no matter how marginally profitable some of the individual transactions look at the time.

One very real risk of hanging on to your material too long is that when you do finally sell it, you'll need some of your capital for everyday expenses leaving less to buy more material with. If you are not careful this will be the beginning of a short downhill slide to not having enough capital to do business and then you have to bootstrap all over again starting at the bottom.

I'm not saying that there aren't times when it makes sense to wait a bit. If you live far from a refiner or buyer, it makes sense to make the trip with a large load rather than a small one. So, you have to factor in the cost of transportation and the value of your time. Some things like electric motor and generator cores or valve cores are sold to remanufacturers who don't want to be bothered with very small lots.

Bottom line is that to be profitable and make the most of your capital and to help make it grow, turn over your material as quickly as you can given the value of your time, transportation and shipping costs, and buyer constraints. In this case, time really is money.

Bootstrapping Your Home-Based Recycling Business

by Michael Meuser

Bootstrapping is the way most of us get started in business. It means relying on our own savings, tools, equipment, trade and barter skills to get the business going.

I've read in some recent articles that encourage folks go into credit card debt or mortgage their homes to get their businesses started. I don't recommend this because this, like getting investors from the outside, puts a large burden on the new business - in many cases a burden that proves to be the undoing of the business when it comes time to repay.

To me, mortgaging your home for a business is an especially bad thing to do. You could very well lose your business trying to repay the loan and then lose your home because you no longer have the business income.

I think the time of seeing our homes as "investments" and treating them as Banks or ATM machines is past. Homes are homes plain and simple - a place where we live, raise our families and enjoy our lives. We should do nothing to jeopardize them. We should invest in our communities, our children and our businesses, but NOT our homes.

Here are a couple of ways that I have bootstrapped businesses. Before I went into the salvage business I was in another business (well actually several other businesses, but we'll keep it simple). About 30 years ago I had a successful woodworking business making high-end brass and ceramic inlayed old-growth redwood clocks, trivets, lamps and wine racks.

I bootstrapped the woodworking business by having a yard sale where I raised enough to purchase a good quality table saw. I then looked through the yellow pages and found several fencing contractors. I offered to cleanup after their jobs if they would let me keep any of the leftover wood that I wanted. All that I called were more than happy with that relationship.

I already knew, from looking at fencing material in lumber yards, that about 10-20% of the redwood of that grade was actually old-growth rather than second-growth. It was in there because it didn't have bullet straight grain and wasn't absolutely clear. I cared little about that. In fact, the odd grains and all made the wood more desirable for my products. In short order I had a steady supply of all the old growth I needed. I sold the leftover cedar I recovered to a fellow in the neighborhood who was making planters. So I got free old-growth redwood and my time and gas paid for.

With the saw, tools I already owned and material I was ready to begin. I could make the products with what I had but I knew that it would be more efficient if I had more and better tools so I made a list. After I totaled up my "wish list" I then figured out how much I would have to make in profit to get what I wanted, how many items I needed to sell over a certain time period and so on.

Bottom line is that within a few months I was able to purchase or trade for the equipment I really needed to do a better more efficient job without going into debt. With this new equipment I was then able to make even more product of higher quality and increase my profits further.

Bootstrapping my way into the woodworking business helped prepare me for and get interested in the recycling and salvage businesses. As I was looking for more woodworking equipment a friend said I should go to the local scrap yard. I'd never been to a scrap yard so I checked it out. I was amazed. Here was an old rusty planer and bandsaw - just what I needed. For the price of the scrap metal plus a little extra and some cleaning, oiling and motor upgrades I had the equipment I needed.

As I look back, I realize that this was a turning point for me. Going to that scrap yard changed my life. I had always been interested in reusing as much as I could. In my woodworking I used material that others would have thrown into a landfill. As I created my trivets, clocks and wine racks and sold them up and down the Redwood Coast my thoughts kept coming back to salvage and recycling.

It wasn't long before I sold my woodworking business to a neighbor. I took cash and a dodge pickup that I knew I'd need for my venture into recycling and salvage. Right off the bat I knew I'd need equipment to do the job right. First place I went was the local salvage yard. There I picked up what was left of a utility trailer and some steel pipe for a small crane for the pickup. I purchased a new 2000 pound winch (I wanted to be sure it would be safe) and took it and the pipe to a local welder and told him what I wanted. Instead of asking how much it would cost, I asked him what sort of equipment and tools he needed and if he'd be interested in a trade? He was very interested.

Back at the salvage yard I picked up the steel he wanted plus a little extra in the hopes that he'd also throw in a small beat up cutting torch set I saw on a shelf while I was there. When I returned he was more than happy with the steel and I knew that he thought he got the better of the bargain by trading a small welding job for a cutting torch set that he never used and some steel that he really needed. I thought I got a great deal too - I paid $12 for the steel.

This and some miscellaneous hand tools kept me in business for some time. Between the truck, trailer, torch and crane I could handle about anything by myself that came my way. With this rig I was able to do building deconstruction, metal and all sorts of other salvage and recycling.

After a time though, it wasn't enough. I had the opportunity to get into the electronic salvage business and I jumped on it (you can read more about it here). The first thing I needed was a larger truck.

The last time at the salvage yard I saw just the hood of a red truck poking out from behind the rubble. I looked closer and it was a beautiful old '47 GMC 2 ton flatbed truck. The bed was in terrible shape but the body was good. I bought it for $100. Turns out the engine was toast, but the transmission and two speed rear axle were excellent. I scored a chevy 6 cylinder engine that slipped right in and I was off and running.

But, during my first few trips doing the electronic salvage (I had to drive from the California foothills to Nevada and back quite often), I found that the old '47 wouldn't be up to the task after all. Fortunately now that it was running and running good it was worth much more than I paid and I sold it to a collected for $4,200. I saw it several times after that in various Mother Lode parades. I still wish I had that truck though.

The truck sale provided the cash I needed to get started on the electronic salvage. Part of the salvage (a part I really didn't want - but boy was I wrong) was hundreds of very large 2 volt batteries. Each one weighed 300 pounds. I thought about it a bit and figured they would be perfect for home power systems and there were plenty of folks in the foothills who lived off the grid. I placed two ads in the local free classified paper - one to sell battery sets for $500 each and one wanted ad for a large flat bed truck. I must be living right because a guy called with a 5 ton flatbed and he wanted to trade for four sets of batteries - done deal! The truck ran lousy but a set of batteries traded to a local backyard mechanic for repairs and all was well. And to think I tried everything I could think of to NOT have those batteries be a part of what I was bidding on.

Even the new big truck wasn't large enough for everything. When I found a buyer for the scrap leftover after I removed the gold laden material, I demanded that he first give me an $8,000 finder's fee. Pretty gutsy at the time, but it was the only way I could make it work. I used this money to get a forklift I needed for $4,000 and arrange to lease a yard in California and hire truckers with semis and flatbeds to haul the material from Nevada to California. There's more to the story and it will all be posted on my Mike's Recycling Tips page and on my blog.

One thing I haven't mentioned but I will mention here is that not having much money helps you to make very smart and sometimes gutsy decisions - basic building blocks of your business that down the road will put you on firm financial ground.

Home-Based Recycling Business Profits: Sell Used Tech Gadgets for Cash

January 5, 2010

Used working and, in many cases, broken PDAs, SmartPhones, iPODs, Cell Phones, Desktop PCs, Laptops, Game Consoles, Video Games and other gadgets can be sold for cash. I haven't sold to any of these companies yet, but their reviews are good. When working with anyone new to you, it pays to be cautious and send them a small quantity first to see how it works out. It also pays to compare prices between the various buyers. This list is not exhaustive, but is representative of what is out there.

I'm sure that you'll think of more ideas, but this is one I thought of. This seems like the near perfect way to raise money for non-profits and yourself as well. You could approach non-profits and churches and tell them that you'd help them setup a fundraising drive to collect old cell phones and other gadgets. You could take care of the business end and split the profits with them.

Here are some of the online buyers of used gadgets that I am aware of:

Pace Butler buys cell phones. They say, "PaceButler Corporation contributes to the local and worldwide community by providing top quality products and service. We are dedicated to customer satisfaction through constant improvement of systems and procedures. When our customers profit, we profit, resulting in a win/win situation."

CERecycle.com buys cell phones, PDAs, iPODs, and SmartPhones. They say, "AX Micro Solutions founded CERecycle.com, which is the world's leader in providing 3rd party repairs & service for PDA's, SmartPhones & iPOD units. We have helped individuals and corporations repair 1000's of Consumer Electronic Devices. We were getting many requests from customers to send us their used, old, broken or outdated Pda's, Cell Phones, iPOD's and smartphones. In the past we had no way of taking those units but that has changed. We have teamed up with several local and national corporations to recycle your Electronic items."

Capital Asset buys used desktop and laptop computers, working or not. They say, "Our aim, from day one, has been to offer our customers, whether a private party or a business , the fastest quality service as well as the best cash value . Quotes that our customers receive online instantly are a result of scrupulous research of the current market in the laptop retail industry and guarantee that you will get a competitive market value for your laptop."

Gazelle.com buys cell phones, PDAs desktops, camera lenses, projectors, LCD monitors, gaming consoles, laptops, digital cameras, GPS devices, satellite radios, streaming
media, home audio, calculators, movies, MP3
players, video games, camcorders, external
drives, Blu-Ray players. They say, "Gazelle believes that electronics recycling starts with reuse. After we buy electronics and gadgets, we evaluate their condition. When we receive items that are still in working condition, we extend their lives by removing all personal data from them, and selling the electronics through a variety of retail and wholesale outlets. Items without market value are recycled responsibly."

BuyMyTronics.com buys cell pnones, MP3 player, apple accessories,
iPODs, digital cameras, ebook readers. The say, "BuyMyTronics.com is here to give you an eco-friendly avenue to get rid of electronics while pocketing some extra cash. We offer a fast, simple and green way to get money for your gadgets—free shipping included. We currently purchase cell phones, Apple iPods, iPhones, laptops and desktops, plus most smart phones and PDAs (Blackberry, Treo, Nokia, HTC, LG, Motorola, etc.) Zunes, MP3 players and game consoles (Playstation, Xbox, Nintendo Wii). We don't care about the condition—we will take it broken or used. Get top dollar for your gadgets while keeping your eWaste out of the landfill!"

If you want to focus on cell phones, check this

Over a billion cell phones were sold in 2007. More in the last years. According to Park Associates there are over 4.5 billion cell phone users on the planet. Home Based Recycling and Salvage 101: Bootsrap Yourself out of the Recession

I began in the recycling and salvage business in the early 1980s. Like today, but not as bad, there was a housing boom and bust that made making a living and maintaining a home difficult for many.

I was inspired to get into the recycling and salvage business after reading a little booklet titled, "Surplus and Salvage." I was amazed that everything I needed to improve my conditions and make a decent income were right in front of me - most everywhere I looked.

Without the insights in that little booklet I would have never dug myself out of the hole I was in. My hope is that this little article will help you see what is out there and how you might change your life for the better once you do.

Recycling and salvage is much more than collecting cans, cardboard, paper, etc. and taking them to a recycling center. This works, but to a very limited degree. For me, recycling and salvage takes some creativity.

In my mind, one of the reasons that our economy is failing is that "find a need and fill it" has become "create a need and fill it." Our economy is driven by greed and over-consumption instead of need. With enough money for advertising ANY need (e.g. desire) can be created. Recycling and salvage brings us back to a solid economic foundation based on need not greed.

In this work we are really operating at the ground level of needs and fulfillment. When I started out I first went from business to business and asked them, "what is it that you need?" Just a few days of doing this produced a long list of things that I should be on the lookout for. It included: old brass valves for rebuilding, auto parts for rebuilding, electric motors and generators for rebuilding, wooden shelving, steel shelving, desks, chairs, file cabinets, hand tools, power tools, plumbing supplies, glass ... The list went on and on.

So, now I had a list of things to keep my eye out for and ...

Recycling for Renewable and Alternative Energy: The next new big thing in recycling and salvage?

With the effects of climate change, peak oil, recession and financial crisis every growing, recycling and salvage for renewable and alternative energy will become increasingly important.

In my recycling and salvage of electronics and telecommunication work I found that there was a ready market for some quite used very large batteries. People with home power systems were willing to pay quite a bit for them and still save money over purchasing them new. These same folks were also looking for generators (alternators), meters, inverters, wire and many other electricity and wiring related items.

Renewable and alternative energy technology is ever-changing. As newer more efficient photovoltaic (PV) panels and complete roofing systems are created, older ones - that are still functional - will be replaced. Though these old ones may not be as efficient as the new, they certainly will have applications and be in demand for home and small business power. Also, as the new ones come to market, there will be heavy discounts on the old that you can take advantage of.

Over the next years the battery packs in hybrid cars will be replaced. I'm guessing that even if the entire pack - an assembly of several batteries - is "bad" there are some batteries in the pack that are good and the others may well be reconditionable. In the past I have found that around 3/4 of the batteries that are replaced can be reconditioned with a very slow 1 amp charge over several days. The manufacturers of the new "smart" chargers claim that they will recondition batteries and bring them back to near their original storage capacity. It is worth checking out... more.

Recycling and Salvage Opportunities Increase as Economy Continues to Worsen

Recently I went to my favorite recycling yard to sell and give away some of my household recycleables. I was amazed to find that, due to budget tightening, the city was no longer helping to fund the center and they now had to charge $5 for each vehicle coming in. Thats a big DISincentive for recycling.

But... It increases your market if you are into recycleables. Folks no longer wishing to pay the $5 may be very interested in your picking them up for free. $5 won't seem like much to you if you are able to collect a large load from folks in your locale.

Also, while at the recycling center recently, I was in line next to a guy who was about to pay $9 to recycle his computer. I looked at it and told him that I'd take it for free. Turns out it was only a year old and terribly fragmented and full of viruses. It took me about 2 hours to clean it up and it works great - a one year old HP with all the bells and whistles.

Just think about how many folks in your town have computers that they'd like to get rid of. If your town is like mine, the line extends for miles when the center offers a free electronics drop off.

Why not save these folks a trip and others a fee and offer to pickup these computers from them. You can keep what you want and take a load of what you don't want to your center on a free day.

One last thing. I've noticed a couple of signs saying "free electronics recycling day cancelled." I'm betting that this too is because of the bad economy. So... it may be harder at the moment to get rid of what you don't want, but easier to get quality computers for reuse, recycling or salvage.

Good Luck

Little DIY action

import url( http://freshstartrecycling.wordpress.com/wp-content/themes/livesearch.css ); Fresh Start Recycling BlogLittle DIY action May 12, 2010 at 2:56 pm · Filed under Construction/Renovation, Environment, Life ·Tagged diy, oil stain, oil stain removal, rubbish removal

So, years ago you used to park the car in your garage. Then you needed somewhere for the chest freezer, and the lawn mower, and the old paint from when you spruced up the bathroom, and eventually your car gets moved out side. Well, “Look at all this room for storage I have!!!” you remark in gleeful anticipation…

Years go buy, things get “stored”. And then stored on top of other things, so on and so forth. Eventually, you call Fresh Start. Fresh Start shows up, hauls things away, donates things to charity, researches the recycling options for you, helps you out when it comes to you taking back your own paint, etc.

(as an aside, store a properly labeled paint chip (not the can of paint),  in a photo album) (paint is difficult to dispose of responsibly in higher quantities and, from experience, you’ll almost NEVER do that touch up you’re saving it for)

But what to do now after all the items you had “stored” are gone? Especially now that you’ve rediscovered that oil stain? Here’s a little DIY video I found on YouTube that may not work with ancient stains, but works pretty well with fresh ones. Check it out!

May 31, 2010 pretty average day! :)

import url( http://freshstartrecycling.wordpress.com/wp-content/themes/livesearch.css ); Fresh Start Recycling BlogMay 31, 2010 pretty average day! :) May 31, 2010 at 6:29 pm · Filed under Community, Environment, Social Media, Vancouver, Volunteer ·Tagged charity, donations, Recycling, sfu, ubc, Vancouver

I have an iPod touch, and not an iPhone, and so it’s easier for me to take photos and come back to the office to post them in a blog, rather than tweet them as they happen.

First job today was out near UBC for a new construction management firm. They’re tearing down the house and they needed to get the garbage out.

And there was garbage!!! Here’s some evidence. White, wiggly bugs! Also known as maggots. They like hanging out in the trash. Pablo, who’s usually a pretty tough, strong guy (works as a bouncer, picks up the heavy stuff – you know the type) was soooo freaked out by them he kept sweeping them out of the garage and kept saying “Reeeaallly???” every time I said, “They need to be put in the truck. They’re garbage!” He couldn’t do it. It was really funny. Well, it’s really funny if you’re me. Pablo didn’t see the humour. Most customers would immediately squeal “Eeeeeek!” and rush inside to call the jovial gang at Fresh Start

Want to Learn how Unwanted Clothing is Recycled

import url( http://freshstartrecycling.wordpress.com/wp-content/themes/livesearch.css ); Fresh Start Recycling BlogWant to Learn how Unwanted Clothing is Recycled June 14, 2010 at 5:47 pm · Filed under Community, Fashion ·Tagged recycled clothing, how clothes are recycled, unwanted clothing, donated clothes, ecochat online, USAgain

This is how PR works. Someone emails something to “the media” and the “media” (us, in this case) take the path of least resistance and publish it verbatim on our blogs, web pages, and twitter feeds. Here’s one such example but I thought there was potential for the reading audience to enjoy it. I had to tidy up the embedded code so it worked, but here’s the email.

Hello Fresh Start Recycling,

Thank you for your team’s dedication to responsible disposal of unwanted belongings. I thought you and your blog readers would be interested in checking out this web event happening tonight at 9pm EST featuring a textile recycling company in the US.

Sincerely,

Alicia

Just downloading some pictures from the Blackberry and I thought I’d put them on the blog. Forgive the quality, as I said, the blackberry 2mb camera.
